The older woman reddened. Emily had heard stories about her attachment to Ben.

“I—”

Emily interrupted. “Look, maybe I was wrong. I gave Betty a few dates, and I might have missed this one.”

Betty looked to Emily, then to Ben, and didn’t say more.

Ben’s gaze narrowed. “All right, you can go back to work.” When she left, he faced Emily. “What’s going on?”

“Nothing, she probably missed this date.”

“I can deal with my own staff, Emily. You don’t have to protect them from me.”

“Of course I don’t.” She squeezed his arm. “It’s going to take her a while to accept me. I’m working on her.”

He stared at her a long time. “All right.” He glanced at his watch. “I have something I want to finish up, but we’ll leave in plenty of time.”

Emily went back to her office, but didn’t close the door to his. She opened her e-mail, glad to see Janice had sent her something to do. She downloaded the attachment and became entrenched with the benefits program. God, it felt good to work again. Almost normal.

She heard the click of Ben’s keys on the computer. Heard his cell phone ring. A pause. “Hello, Mallory.” Another pause. A very male chuckle.

Mallory. Who was Mallory?
